Brews & ceus: April

Hoarding is not just about clutter. It is shaped by learning histories, reinforcement, and deeply held personal values.

This work presents a behavioral analytic framework that integrates:
• Functional assessment of saving, acquiring, and discarding
• Values clarification to guide goal setting
• Reinforcement strategies aligned with what matters most to the client

By arranging contingencies that support discarding and organization in values-consistent ways, this approach aims to improve engagement, reduce treatment dropout, and promote lasting change while preserving dignity and autonomy.

Implications for clinicians and researchers include new directions for values-aligned behavioral interventions and the need for further empirical evaluation.

Because complex needs deserve collective solutions.
