ADOS-2 Assessments
The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition (ADOS-2) is a standardized, play- and conversation-based assessment used to evaluate social communication, restricted interests, and repetitive behaviors associated with autism across age and language levels. It is administered in structured modules and scored using specific algorithms to help inform diagnostic decision-making as part of a broader, multi-source evaluation process.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is ADOS-2?
The ADOS-2 is a semi-structured, standardized assessment that uses play, conversation, and activities to observe behaviors related to social communication and restricted/repetitive patterns that may be associated with autism.
Who can benefit from an ADOS-2 assessment?
Children, adolescents, and adults for whom there are questions about possible autism—or a need for updated diagnostic clarity—may benefit from an ADOS-2 as part of a comprehensive evaluation.
Is the ADOS-2 a stand-alone autism diagnosis?
No. ADOS-2 results are one important data point and must be integrated with developmental history, caregiver and teacher reports, clinical interviews, and other assessments to make or rule out an autism diagnosis.
Who administers the ADOS-2 at VATN?
At VATN, ADOS-2 assessments are administered by clinicians who are formally trained in the tool, including speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, and behavior analysts, with results interpreted within their scope of practice and in consultation with the broader clinical team when needed.
What should we expect during the appointment?
The session typically feels like structured play or conversation, depending on age and language level. The clinician will present activities, toys, and questions while quietly observing and taking notes; caregivers may observe or participate as appropriate, which will be discussed during intake.
How long does the ADOS-2 process take?
The direct assessment itself usually takes about 45–90 minutes, although total time—including intake, scoring, interpretation, and feedback—extends over multiple contacts or visits.
How will results be shared?
You will receive a feedback session to walk through scores, clinical impressions, and recommendations in accessible language, along with a written report you can share with medical providers, schools, or other members of your support team.
How is the ADOS-2 assessment funded at VATN?
At this time, ADOS-2 assessments at VATN are available through private pay only. Payment details and any documentation you may need to submit to your insurance for possible reimbursement can be discussed with our intake and billing team prior to scheduling.
Does VATN provide an official autism diagnosis after the ADOS-2?
No. VATN completes the ADOS-2 assessment and provides a detailed report that can be shared with a qualified diagnosing provider—such as a licensed psychologist, developmental pediatrician, psychiatrist, or neurologist—or used as part of an educational evaluation for school eligibility decisions.
