Teacher Training at VATN

VATN’s education and teacher trainings are designed to give school teams practical tools they can use right away in real classrooms. We focus on supporting autistic and ID/DD students through evidence-informed strategies for behavior, communication, executive functioning, and inclusion, always grounded in trauma-informed and neurodiversity-affirming practice. Sessions are interactive and school-specific, helping teachers, paraprofessionals, and related service providers problem-solve real scenarios, strengthen collaboration, and create learning environments where all students can participate and thrive.

Licensure and Credentials of Training Consultants

All training consultants are fully certified and licensed teachers in the state of Virginia, with direct experience navigating classroom demands, curriculum, and school expectations. In addition, every trainer is a certified and licensed behavior analyst in Virginia, bringing specialized expertise in behavior, de‑escalation, and environmental supports. Each consultant has a minimum of five years of hands‑on classroom experience managing daily teacher responsibilities and responding to the unique needs of children and teenagers, ensuring that recommendations are both practical and realistic for real‑world school settings.

Authorization

After submitting your intake forms, we’ll work alongside your Support Coordinator to gather all documentation needed for service authorization. Our team prepares a comprehensive support plan and submits the authorization request to the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS) for review. DBHDS carefully evaluates your submitted information to ensure all clinical qualifications, regulations, and documentation requirements are met before approving services; you and your coordinator will be promptly informed once authorization is granted so you can begin your customized treatment journey.

Intake Forms

After your referral is accepted, we’ll initiate the authorization process with your Support Coordinator by your side every step of the way! While waiting for approval, you’ll complete two essential forms: the Release of Information and the Service Intake Packet. These forms ensure we have everything needed to tailor our services to your unique goals.

Begin Services

Once authorization is approved, your journey officially begins! Your clinician or clinical team (if receiving multiple services) will contact you to schedule an intake meeting. During the first few weeks, you’ll collaborate closely with your clinician to complete a thorough assessment and develop a personalized treatment plan designed to help you thrive.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is teacher training?

Teacher training is a behavioral consultation service that helps educators build effective skills in behavioral response, de‑escalation, and positive classroom strategies. It focuses on practical, evidence‑informed tools that teachers and school teams can integrate into daily routines, including environmental changes to better support sensory, physical, and behavioral needs.

Who qualifies for teacher training services?

Teacher training services are available to individual teachers, paraprofessionals, related service providers, and school administrators. Whole teams, specific programs, or entire schools can also participate when a coordinated, school‑wide approach to behavior and classroom supports is needed.

What does a the consultant do?

The consultant observes the classroom and school routines, reviews existing plans or data, and completes environmental and behavioral assessments to understand what is happening and why. Using this information, the consultant provides tailored recommendations, models strategies, and offers ongoing coaching and feedback so staff can implement supports with confidence.

Does teacher training include direct therapy services?

The training does not include direct therapy services for students. Instead, the consultant uses observations of students and classroom dynamics to guide feedback and recommendations, and then coaches the adults on how to deliver supports within the natural school environment.

Where are teacher training services delivered?

Teacher training services can be provided in person within the school setting or through secure telehealth, depending on the needs, location, and preferences of the team. Some schools may use a combination of in‑person visits and virtual follow‑up for flexibility and continuity.

What is the teacher's / schools role?

The teacher’s and school’s role is to collaborate with the consultant by sharing concerns and goals, allowing observations, and actively engaging in training and coaching sessions. The school team is responsible for implementing the recommended strategies, monitoring how they are working, communicating about barriers, and maintaining consistent practices so that changes are sustainable.
